Kirby'southward Dream Land 3 Review
The last first-party release for the SNES returns, with a second take a chance to find an audience.
Considering so many players missed out on it when information technology first arrived in cartridge grade, there should be a fairly big crowd of fans who might now consider investing eight bucks to own this nether-the-radar Kirby outing on the Virtual Panel. And, if they do accept the 800 Wii Indicate plunge, they should be suitably satisfied -- because while Kirby'due south Dream Land three isn't the most dynamic and memorable of the pink puffball'southward adventures, it does take a variety of unique ideas that set it autonomously.
Similar Kirby's animal friends. These Yoshi-similar partner characters fabricated their debut in the Game Boy's Kirby'south Dream Land 2, and continue in their supportive role in this sequel (and in greater numbers). The characters include Rick the Hamster, Coo the Owl and Kine the Fish from DL2, along with newcomers Nago the Cat, Pitch the Bird and Chuchu the Pink Hulk-Like Thing.
Each of the 6 can exist paired upwards with our hero to access combined abilities -- Kirby has his standard power to suck upwards and blot his enemies' powers, of course, only if he has an enemy power plus an active beast friend at the same time, the results are more than destructive (and comical). Kirby with the Parasol ability past himself will swing an umbrella like a sword, and drift slowly through the air. But pair that Parasol with Nago, and y'all'll discover a pogo-stick jumping power straight out of NES DuckTales. Join upwardly with Chuchu, and the umbrella volition turn into a spinning height which both she and Kirby will ride around in circles.
And and so on. The variety of different powers and combinations means lot of new abilities to discover -- so even though the standard side-scrolling stages are simple to become through, you lot can get through them with your own selection of technique.
Another new friend introduced in Dream Land 3 was Gooey. Like the 6 animal helpers earlier him, Gooey could appear to help Kirby out -- but, uniquely, he was his own man. Instead of combining with Kirby for joint attacks, Gooey is playable on his own -- a second player can selection upwardly a second controller and take command of him at any time.
With a round-shaped body, goofy expression and a long tongue that substituted for Kirby's equivalent vacuum-suction inhalation assail, Gooey offered the option of co-op play. His capabilities aren't equally numerous as Kirby himself, though, making him feel very much a second fiddle. He tin't combine with the animal friends himself, and his own copy abilities gained from eating foes are express. Gooey, truthfully, is an odd little addition to the game.
Perchance information technology was considering 2-player co-op was such a cool part of Kirby Super Star, and the Dream Land 3 development squad felt they needed to feature information technology too -- but Super Star did information technology so much better. Your friends might not similar you whatsoever more if you make them play as Gooey. And you can summon him to be a reckoner-controlled partner if you're playing single player, but you're amend off just sticking with Kirby and the animal gang.
The oddities of Gooey aside, though, Kirby's Dream Land iii really is a quaint and capable fiddling Kirby adventure that is pretty enjoyable to play -- and especially so if you're one of the great many players who missed out on it in 1997, because you were already too decorated spending your gaming cash on titles that ended their names with "64." Give information technology a glance if you're a fan of Nintendo's brusk pink hero.
